The habit of reading has been replaced.

On average, children between the ages of two and five watch 32 hours per week of television. This has been shown in numerous studies to reduce I.Q. and lower academic performance.

In high-income families, children hear nearly 45 million words by age three. For children in middle-income families that number drops to 28 million. In low-income families that number drops even more to less than 15 million words.

About The Reading Initiative

We were founded with a clear mission: restore reading to its rightful place as one of the great habits of our society—particularly for low-income families.

There are many organizations doing wonderful work like providing books and partnering with schools to encourage reading. We intend only to become an advocate across media platforms for the value and habit of reading.

Join us and help restore reading.
